Volunteer work opportunities for you in the Democratic Republic of Congo

LMIA is based in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Volunteers can take part in teaching, care, administration, or IT training projects.

Teaching volunteers work with our primary and secondary school children primarily but also help train the academy staff across our five sites. Care volunteers assist in the care and education of vulnerable children at the academy from nursery to primary level including, whilst Administration and IT volunteers help us make the college administration system efficient and train staff to be competent in IT use.

Volunteers stay at our resource centre in Kinshasa with local Congolese members of staff and their families or can be placed with a host family. In either case, you will find the people you stay with very generous, hospitable and always at your service.

Travel and Tourism in the DR Congo

In the capital Kinshasa, you will want to visit the Congo River and lagoons. The DR Congo is also an excellent starting point for travel around neighbouring Congo Brazzaville, as well as the countries of south and east Africa.

Please note:

The British Government advises against unessential travel to the DRC.

Although MenelikEducation naturally respects Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice, it is our belief that the situation in Kinshasa, the capital city, is safe enough for us to recruit volunteers. However, the Eastern region of Congo is unsafe and volunteers should not travel to the Congolese interior without consulting us. All volunteers must also recognise that while the LMIA does its utmost to protect volunteers and ensure them a high quality experience in Kinshasa, they travel to and stay in DR Congo at their own risk and the LMIA accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage they may occur as a result of volunteering.

The level of health care in DR Congo is poor. The Centre Prive d'Urgence (CPU) clinic in Kinshasa is able to cope with basic health problems and to stabilise a patient after most serious accidents. Outside Kinshasa, standard modern medical facilities are practically non-existent. For seriour illnesses or accidents, medical evacuation to South Africa (or elsewhere) is advisable as soon as possible. You should ensure that you have comprehensive medical and travel insurance, to include specifically the very high costs of evacuation by air ambulance in case of an emergency.

Malaria, rabies, polio, meningitis and cholera are common in DR Congo and all visitors must be vaccinated against Yellow Fever. You should seek medical advice before travelling to DRC and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up-to-date.  For further information on vaccination requirements, health outbreaks and general disease protection and prevention you should visit the websites of the National Travel Heath Network and Centre NaTHNaC and NHS Scotland's Fit For Travel or call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

Entry requirements

All British passport holders need a valid visa to travel to DRC.  This must be obtained before travelling. Contact the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  A Rwandan or Ugandan immigration stamp in your passport should not prohibit admission, but you may still experience difficulties on arrival in the DRC if you do have them.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry.

Satellite phones, GPS receivers or Military clothing

You are advised not to bring satellite phones, GPS receivers or military clothing into the DRC as this could lead to difficulties with the security authorities.
